The load on the server is reduced. This concept, illustrated in Figure 20-4, is also called serverless backup. The reality today is that the benefits are partially implemented. The backup server is the only one that knows about data to be backed up: names of files and blocks on the storage device that contain the to-be-backed-up data. This alone is a substantial part of the backup process, especially for incremental backups of small-sized files. Several vendors (such as EMC, Crossroads, and Pathlight) are developing products to enable SAN-based server-free backups.
